Moms

I’ve known lots of Moms.

At this moment in time, I know several mothers with sick children. These Moms are keeping things going for them and other family members, and they do it with grace and a smile. I know mothers who are sick themselves, and they are doing what it takes to heal, and at the same time, they are mothering their brood, giving of themselves out of a supply that seems too shallow, yet it is enough.

I know mothers for whom it is a struggle to put one foot in front of the other every day, and yet they do. I know mothers who care for sick parents as well as their own children, and find themselves stretched and strained, but still they go on.

I know mothers who do it all on their own, without help from a partner, and these mothers astound me with their energy and perseverance.

I know mothers who are brave enough to imagine a different kind of life. In trying something new, they are giving their children an example which will last their lifetimes.

I know mothers who give of their time and their love so freely that their children will grow up thinking that’s the way everyone is. And so they will be that way themselves, and how wonderful is that!

I know women who are not mothers, yet they nurture the people around them so much and so consistently, that they daily earn the title anyway.

I know fathers who have had to be both mother and father for their children, though it was never what they planned. They are the definition of what it is to be steadfast.

I know mothers in Heaven, who there continue the work they started here, now unencumbered by pain or any limitation. Their love is fierce and ever-present, their works inexhaustible. We miss them more than we can say, but they are cheering us on at every step, lifting us up, looking on us in awe, joy, and love.

Mothers, you make the world go around with your self-sacrifice, enduring love, kindness, and hands extended in service toward others, and I want to thank you all for your example to me.  As you tend your garden, you daily make the world a better place.  Happy Mother’s Day to all of you!
